A 17-year-old boy, who is the grandson of one of the suspects in custody over the murder of Joel and Isaiah Henry, succumbed yesterday after he was found with head injuries and a chop wound along the Number 2 back dam.

Dead is Haresh Singh, also known as `Raj’, 17, of Lot 8, Number 3 Village, West Coast Berbice, a relative of three of the suspects presently in police custody in connection with the murders of the Henry cousins.

This killing appeared to be a reprisal for the death of the Henrys and marked a major escalation in the violence that has convulsed West Coast Berbice since Sunday.

His sister, Amrita Singh, explained yesterday that her brother left home just around midday on his motorcycle to head to the back dam to take water for some persons who were working on a farm.

Moments after, their younger brother was heading to the same area to graze cows when he saw smoke on the dam. He then informed other relatives who rushed to the area to investigate, where they then found Singh lying motionless on the ground.

According to the sister, Singh, who sustained a major head injury, was seen bleeding from his nose and ears.

His uncle who rushed him to the New Amsterdam Public Hospital said Singh succumbed about five minutes after arriving at the health facility. “We had to bring him here `cause the road been blocked to go Fort (Wellington Hospital)”, the uncle who asked for his identity not to be released said.

He added, “He been a carry in water for them boys and them say he get beat up at the back dam. He get one injury pon he head and he get one chop on he hand”.

According to the police, Singh’s motorcycle was found torched.

According to Singh’s sister and uncle, police arrested the deceased’s grandfather and two of his uncles in connection with the murder of the Henrys.

According to his sister, the previous night a group of persons stoned their house and issued threats to the relatives.

Police have since launched an investigation while a source at the Major Crimes Unit said that they would be assisting with that investigation.
