Corentyne men charged with Orlando Jonas’ murder

Two Corentyne men were remanded to prison yesterday after being charged with the murder of Orlando Jonas, who was fatally stabbed last Saturday evening along the Chesney Public Road.

Samson Gangapershad, 25, of Tain Village, Corentyne, and Kris Nandlall, 27, of Chesney Village, Corentyne, appeared at the New Amsterdam Magistrate’s Court before Magistrate Renita Singh via Zoom and were read the joint charge.

It is alleged that on Saturday, September 5, at Chesney Village, Corentyne, they murdered Orlando Michael Jonas.

They were presented by attorneys Moti Singh, Donovan Rangiah and Sanjeev Datadin, who told the court that their clients were beaten by police officers while in custody. As a result, the magistrate ordered that the men be medically examined.

The matter was then adjourned to September 29 for disclosure.

Jonas, also known as “Lando”, 26, a labourer of Lot 500 Number 1 Road, Corentyne and his friend Mahendra Ramnarine also known “Mickey”, 18, a labourer, of Lot 628 Number 1 Road, Corentyne, were returning home from work last Saturday evening when they encountered the accused.

Based on CCTV footage seen by this newspaper, Jonas and Ramnarine, were heading home from work on their bicycles when they came into contact with the two suspects, who were seated on the opposite side of the road.

It appears that one of the suspects said something to the two, causing them to turn around and approach the suspects. An argument ensued during which Jonas was stabbed and Ramnarine sustained two lacerations on both sides of his mouth.

Both Jonas and Ramnarine got on their bicycles to escape but Jonas fell to the ground while Ramnarine sped off.

Jonas, who was left behind, sustained a stab wound to the left side of his abdomen, a wound on the left side of his jaw and another under his chin.

He was later rushed to the Port Mourant Hospital, where he was pronounced dead on arrival, while Ramnarine was treated and sent home the following morning.
