A miner died at Big Hope Backdam, at Waini, Region One, after a tree fell and pinned him on Monday.

Dead is Marquez Cornelius, a 29-year-old resident of Charity Housing Scheme, and an employee of Singh’s Mining Operations.

A Guyana Police Force report stated that Cornelius was prospecting at the backdam on Monday, around 10.35,  when he was pinned as a result of a tree falling.

The report said that workers immediately went to assist him by removing the tree. They observed that his body was lifeless and he was bleeding from his ears.

He was then placed in a vehicle and taken to the 70Km Police Outpost.

Approximately at 4pm on the same day, Cornelius was taken to the Suddie Public Hospital, where he was examined by a doctor. He was subsequently pronounced dead around 6.30 pm.

Deleep Singh, owner of Singh’s Mining Operations, told Stabroek News that he received information about the accident from his son, who informed him that Cornelius was badly injured.

Singh noted that Cornelius was employed as a General Manager at the mining operation and had been with the company for at least 12 years.

He was a father of one and was described as a humble person.

Meanwhile, the Ministry of Labour yesterday announced that it is collaborating with the Guyana Geology and Mines Com-mission (GGMC) to conduct a thorough investigation of the circumstances of the accident.

In a press release, it explained that arrangements are being made to visit the accident site.

It added that the Minis-try of Labour is deeply concerned about the recent fatalities in the mining sector and offers condolences to the family of the deceased.
