Suspected Syndicato gang members among six held in Kaituma hotel raid

Six suspects, including four Venezuelans who are suspected to be members of a Syndicato gang, were arrested on Friday after the police raided a hotel at Port Kaituma, Region One.

The police, in a press release, said the suspects were taken into custody after a team of ranks conducted a search at the hotel between 6.30 am and 7 am.

The Venezuelans claimed that they work as miners in neighbouring Venezuela. However, investigators believed that they are members of a Syndicato gang.

Two of the suspects are Guyanese. They said they work as miners.

According to the police, the Venezuelans were arrested for failing to present themselves to immigration, while the two Guyanese are being accused of aiding and abetting them to enter the country illegally.

The police also seized two ATV’s, $100,000 in cash and a quantity of suspected raw gold which was found at the premises.
