Accused maintains innocence in Parika fuel dealer’s murder

Leading his defence at his trial, Curt Thomas yesterday proclaimed his innocence in the murder of Parika fuel dealer Seeram Singh.

In an unsworn statement at the High Court yesterday morning, Thomas said he was never at or near the scene of the murder and that he did not know Singh.

According to the accused, his girlfriend and one of the primary investigators, whom he identified as “Officer Bowman,” once shared a relationship and he believed that to be the reason he was charged with the crime.

During his virtual appearance from the Lusignan Prison, Thomas called his girlfriend’s mother—Dorothy Pratt, as a witness, in his defence.

The woman testified that Thomas was at her house on the night in question at 9pm, but was unable under cross-examination by Prosecutor Tuanna Hardy to account for his whereabouts any time before or even after that time.

Singh was said to have been killed sometime earlier on the night of Saturday April 30th, 2016, at Parika Outfall, East Bank Essequibo.

An eyewitness has testified to seeing Thomas shoot Singh.

Meanwhile, the forensic analyst had testified that clothing submitted to him for testing which the police said belonged to and were worn by the accused on the night of the shooting tested positive for gunpowder residue.

Thomas is likely to know his fate tomorrow following the trial judge’s summation of the case to the jury, which will thereafter deliberate on a verdict.

The prosecution closed its case yesterday, following which defence attorney Lyndon Amsterdam presented his addresses to the jury.

That process will wrap up today, when Prosecutor Tuanna Hardy makes her addresses to the jury.

Thomas is on trial before Justice Navindra Singh at the High Court in Georgetown.
