Brazilian wanted after killing miner, wounding other at Cuyuni backdam

A man is now dead while another is critically injured after they were reportedly both stabbed by their drinking buddy during an argument at Balamani Backdam, Cuyuni River, on Tuesday.

The identity of the dead man remained unknown up to press time, while the police identified the injured man as Vivian La Cruz, a miner of St. Ignatius, Lethem.

Police spokesman Assistant Commissioner Royston Andries-Junor yesterday confirmed the attack, which occurred around 3am on Tuesday, and added that efforts were being made to arrest the suspect, who is a Brazilian national.

According to a police press release, the dead man, La Cruz and the suspect were drinking at a shop at Balamani Landing when then argument erupted.

As a result, the suspect is reported to have whipped out a knife and stabbed the men multiple times about their bodies.

The victims were transported to the Bartica Hospital, where the unidentified man was pronounced dead. La Cruz was treated and transferred to the Georgetown Public Hospital. He is said to be in a critical condition.
