Girl, 11, with COVID-19 died of cancer complication

The 11-year-old child who tested positive for the coronavirus disease (COVID-19) and died on Friday afternoon at the Georgetown Public Hospital (GPH) will not be classified as a COVID-19 fatality, an official of the Ministry of Health (MoH) has said.

Sunday Stabroek was told that the child had cancer but at the time she was hospitalised she was not yet diagnosed. However, upon her admission to the hospital she was tested for COVID-19 and her results returned the following day revealing that she was infected with the virus.

However, following her death it was discovered that she was suffering from cancer and it was determined that she died as a result of complication related to this disease. As a result the MoH official said the ministry will not be including the child as a COVID-19 fatality. Up to the end of Friday, a total of 134 COVID-19 deaths had been recorded.
