The Devon Ramnauth Region Two Development Youth Cricket League which is set to bowl off at the weekend, if the weather permits, is not just an ordinary cricket league.

This is according to first-class left-arm spinner Anthony Adams who disclosed to Stabroek Sports that, aside from the much needed on-field action, the league is also presenting opportunities for the players to be mentored by the region’s seasoned cricketers.

“Although I’m involved, I’m not a coach but more as a mentor for one of the teams which is United Warriors,” the 27-year-old Adams, who made his first-class debut for the Guyana Jaguars several seasons ago, told this publication.  “I’ve been mainly speaking with one of the captains. I haven’t met the other players but my interactions with Benny Persaud [Skipper of United Warriors] is mainly about captaincy and just sharing my little knowledge to help improve his overall skills,” he added.

Adams is currently the skipper of the senior Essequibo side and he certainly knows a thing or two about leadership after leading Essequibo to its first major title at any level when his side won the 2017 Guyana Cricket Board (GCB)/ Jaguars three – day Franchise league.

Adams also lauded Ramnauth’s efforts to spearhead the youth tournament, calling it a “great initiative.”  “It’s a great initiative simply because the last time Essequibo hosted an under – 19 tournament was way back in 2011. I think Devon’s thought process and interest in Essequibo’s cricket is good because he’s starting with the youngsters and getting them involved,” said Adams.

The under -19 T20 league will feature six teams competing for top honours. The competition has been given the go ahead by Regional Vice Chairman Humace Oudit.

Teams: Essequibo Eagles U-19, Golden Fleece Vikings Youths, Queenstown U-19, Rising Star’s Spartans, Reliance Hustlers Youths and United Warriors.
