Grand Coastal has joined the list of hotels providing accommodation for oil and gas workers who have to be under quarantine.

As a part of measures to stem the possible spread of COVID-19, workers are required to be quarantined before making their way onto the offshore operations

Notices posted on the hotel’s Facebook Page, website and around the hotel state they are fully booked until further notice.

“The main location of Grand Coastal Hotel is currently booked out until further notice. We are using the facilities of Caribbean Inn for rooms, meals, catering and events,” the website notice stated.

Stabroek News understands that the hotel has been occupied since the start of this month by oil workers.

A visit to the Hotel at Le Ressouvenir, East Coast Demerara, yesterday revealed that the entire facility is being used by oil workers and the hotel has implemented measures necessary to combat the spread of COVID-19. At its main entrance, the hotel has erected a tent equipped with hand washing and sanitising facilities. A staff member is also stationed to test the temperature of guests.

The tourism and hospitality sector has taken a severe blow as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic.

However,  several hotels such as the Marriott, Pegasus, Cara Lodge and now Grand Coastal have been given a lifeline with the stay of workers for quarantine purposes.

Carlos Montenegro, the General Manager of the Pegasus Hotel, earlier this year had explained to Stabroek News that they had an occupancy rate of approximately 30%. Most were workers on rotation from working on the oil operations, he said.

“These oil companies are very serious about the measures in place by hotels for COVID-19. They tend to more trust established hotels because we operate with a high standard and this is what they are looking for,” Montenegro said.

At that time, he explained that the workers would stay for 14 days before returning to the offshore rigs to relieve another set of workers.

Some services of Grand Coastal Hotel have been moved to the Caribbean Inn Hotel located on Agriculture Road, Mon Repos, East Coast Demerara.
