Handicapped Cane Grove child drowns

A nine-year-old handicapped child drowned yesterday afternoon after he reportedly left his Cane Grove, East Coast Demerara (ECD) home unknowing to his relatives.

The police did not release the identity of the dead child who they said attended the Virginia Primary School.

Police spokesman Assistant Commissioner Royston Andries-Junor last evening said the incident occurred between 3pm and 4pm yesterday.

The police said that the child was at home with his father and sister. Sometime after, he left his Lot 94 Saywac Cane Grove, ECD home unknowing to them.

After he could not be found, an alarm was raised and a search party was activated.

During the process, the child’s body was found in a nearby canal.

The police were summoned and the child’s body was examined during which a cut was seen to his left hand.

His father told the police that he sustained the wound about a week ago while jumping a fence in the area.

The body of the child was escorted to the CC Nicholson Hospital where he was pronounced dead.
