WD Masters beat Sandpipers by three wickets

Yesterday’s action in the Demerara Zone of the Guyana Cricket Board/ Tropical Springs Over-40 T20 tournament saw WD Masters securing a three–wicket win over Sandpipers while both matches at Enmore Cricket Club ending in walkovers.

At Everest Cricket Club, the first match between Everest Masters and Bel Air Rubis Ultra Tec was washed out but with good sunshine, the afternoon match between WD Masters and Sandpipers was reduced to a 12-over affair.

WD Masters won the toss and inserted Sandpipers who were bowled out for 60 in 11.4 overs. WD Masters, despite a shaky chase, scampered to 62 for seven in 11.4 overs.

Sandpipers’ innings was riddled with the fall of  wickets regularly despite four catches being put down.

However, Bhupendra Deokie struck a six and two fours during a brisk 20 while Raymond Jaisingh made 11 and after the half way stage, the East Bank side lost their last six wickets for 14 runs. Sandpipers also benefitted from 15 extras.

Seenarine Mathura was the principal wicket taker with two for five while Chabiraj Ramcharran and Sudesh Persaud picked up two wickets for 12 and 15 runs respectively.

In the chase, WD Masters were rocked early as Elroy Fernandes was dismissed compliments of a spectacular one handed catch at short long on by Nandkrishna Ram. However, a series of dropped catches ultimately proved costly.

Mathura was gifted a life when on two and went on to make an instrumental 13 as wickets tumbled at the other end. With nine needed from the last two overs, Patrick Khan hammered a four and a six that landed on the roof of the main pavilion over long on to seal the close victory.

Left-arm pacer, Deokie grabbed two for five and was supported by Ryan Mangah (2-6) and Nandkrishna Ram (2-19)
