Harbour bridge seeks to ease rush hour congestion with earlier west-bound double lane

In an effort to reduce the morning rush hour traffic congestion on the Demerara Harbour Bridge, as well as ease the build-up of traffic on the East and West banks of Demerara, a decision has been taken to restrict the west-bound traffic on the bridge from 6.15 am to 7 am

In a notice published on its Facebook page yesterday morning, the DHBC announced that double lane traffic proceeding east on the Demerara Harbour Bridge will begin from 6.15am until  7am.

Prior to this, west-bound bridge traffic was closed from 7am to 8am.

This agreement was made on Thursday following a meeting with the management of the Demerara Harbour Bridge Corporation (DHBC) and the Guyana Police Force (GPF).

The new arrangement, according to the DHBC will take effect from Monday, December 7 and aims to lessen the traffic congestion along the East Bank corridor.

A follow-up meeting with be held between the two agencies next Thursday to reevaluate the solution “with the aim of arriving at the best possible solution to this very teething problem”, DHBC noted.

Commuters are being urged to plan their travels accordingly.

“We sincerely apologize for any inconvenience this new arrangement may cause and ask that you continue to co-operate with DHBC and the GPF as we work collectively towards a more comprehensive solution,” DHBC said.

The arrangement will only be effective during weekdays.
