A 60-year-old man was fatally shot and relieved of his XR motorcycle during an attack last night in front of a popular Garnett Street, Kitty bar.

The dead man has been identified as Peter Gonsalves, a construction worker of East Street, Georgetown.

The attack unfolded around 9.30 pm during which Gonsalves was shot about three times about his body.

One of Gonsalves’ workers, whose name was only given as Ravindra was the pillion rider at the time of the incident. He escaped unhurt but could not be located by family members up to press time.

Stabroek News understands that at the time of the shooting, Gonsalves and Ravindra were on their way to purchase cigarettes.

As they stopped in front of the Red Bar, two bandits on a motorcycle allegedly pulled up alongside him and opened fire.

The bandits escaped with Gonsalves’ XR motorcycle. Gonsalves was pronounced dead at the scene.

A man, who wished not to be named, told Stabroek News that he had just stopped his motorcar along Garnett Street when he heard gunshots ringing out.

“When I roll and come up a little bit further, I see this man (Gonsalves) tumble and fall pun the ground,” he said.

The man said he stopped and he asked Ravindra what had happened and he responded, “them just shoot me boss man deh. We stop fah buy cigarette and them shoot he. Two man pun a bike just shoot he and gone with he bike”.

Ravindra’s mother, who was also present at the scene told this newspaper that she video-called Ravindra about an hour before the incident.

The woman, who also wished not to be named said that during the conversation Ravindra related to her that he and Gonsalves had to go on the road to “run an errand” and when they returned they would inform her.

Shortly after, she said she received a call from a strange number. Upon answering, the woman said that Ravindra, who sounded shaken told her that Gonsalves had just been shot.

“He seh ‘mommy, come, come. Them just shoot Uncle Peter and gone with he bike’. So I tell he wait I coming deh,” the woman said.

The police are hoping to retrieve CCTV footage from the bar in the hope of identifying the perpetrators of the crime.
