Windsor Forest youth feared drowned while setting fishing hooks

A seventeen-year-old boy of Windsor Forest is missing and believed to have drowned yesterday midday after he was caught in the tide while setting fishing hooks in the Atlantic Ocean some 100 feet from the seawall.

Police have since arrested two brothers who accompanied him at the time of the incident.

The missing teen has been identified as Surendra Singh, a labourer, of Line Top, Windsor Forest, West Coast Demerara.

Investigations by the police revealed that Singh along with two friends, who are brothers, one of whom is 16-years-old and the other 17-years-old, left the deceased’s residence at about 9 am yesterday for the Windsor Forest seawall to set fishing hooks.

It was said that the teens were in waist-high water setting the hooks. Upon finishing, the boys started back with the older brother ahead and Singh and the younger brother behind when the now deceased and the sixteen-year-old fell into a channel and went under. An eyewitness who was at the seawall at the time of the incident was said to have gone into rescue the boys with his fishing boat but was only able to save the sixteen-year-old while Singh who couldn’t swim didn’t surface.

Divers subsequently went in search of the missing teen but their attempts proved futile.

The matter was reported to the police and the two brothers were arrested. They are assisting with investigations.
