Winston Missigher and Sheama Tyrell are the 2020 South American 10K Road Classic Champions.

Missigher clocked 34m:22.34s on the flat, breezy course to win the local leg of the 18th edition of the event yesterday.

His rivals, Cleveland Thomas (34:53.20) and Kennard Hartog (36:06.84) followed in second and third positions for the all-local race which started at Mary and concluded at the finish line inside the National  Track and Field Centre.

Sheama Tyrell clocked 43:00.87 to claim her win as Shaquka Tyrell and Aliyah Headley finished second and third in a time of 47:27.47 and 49:56.68 respectively.

In 2019, Kenyan athletes, Alex Ekesa and Veronica Jepkostei came, saw and conquered winning the open male and female categories of the Classic respectively. However, due to the pandemic no foreign athletes could have competed in the meet which traditionally attracts international runners.

Missigher attributed his victory to his ‘resilience’ and hard work stating that his second place finish to Ekesa last year motivated him to win.

In the women’s race, Tyrell clocked 43:00.87 to claim her win as Shaquka Tyrell and Aliyah Headley finished second and third in a time of 47:27.47 and 49:56.68 respectively.

Francis King and Carla Adams won the men and women Masters category respectively.

Winners returned home with $150,000 apiece, while the first and second runners up pocketed  $125,000 and $100,000 each.
