A pedestrian is now hospitalised after he was struck by an intoxicated Ministry of Social Protection driver who was speeding along Plantain Walk Public Road, West Bank Demerara (WBD) on Monday night.

Basil Persaud, a 57-year-old salesman of Lot ‘C’ Middle Street, Pouderoyen, West Bank Demerara, was crossing the road when the accident occurred.

Police investigations reveal that at approximately 8:20 pm, a minibus bearing registration number PWW 1958 was proceeding north along the western side of Plantain Walk Public Road, WBD, at a fast rate, when the left front side of the vehicle collided with Persaud who was allegedly crossing the road from east to west. As a result of the collision, Persaud fell onto the road causing him to sustain injuries about his body.

He was picked up in a conscious state and taken to the West Demerara Regional Hospital by the minibus driver, where he was admitted to the Male Surgical Ward. His injuries include a fractured left hand and left foot.

His current condition is regarded as stable Meanwhile, a Breathalyzer test was conducted on the 40 year-old driver of the minibus and showed an alcohol content of 60 and 61 micrograms which exceeds the prescribed limit.

The report added that a statement was taken and the vehicle was lodged to be examined by the licensing and certifying officer.

An investigation is ongoing.
