Fifty-six-year-old woman is latest COVID victim

The Ministry of Health yesterday said that one more person who tested positive for the novel coronavirus (COVID-19) has died. This takes the total number of deaths from the pandemic to 159.

The latest fatality is a 56-year-old female from Region Three (Essequibo Islands-West Demerara).

Meanwhile, twenty-six new COVID-19 cases were recorded on Thursday with Region Ten once more experiencing a spike in infections.

This is according to the Ministry of Health’s COVID-19 dashboard which shows that the 26 new cases recorded increased the total number of positive confirmed cases in the country to 6,042. This came after 334 more persons were tested for the virus and increasing the total number of persons tested in the country to 34,986.

Based on the regional distribution of cases in the country, the new cases were recorded in four of the country’s ten administrative regions. Three new cases were reported in Region Four, one each in regions Six and Seven and 21 in Region Ten.

There are now 679 active cases in the country, 35 of which are in institutional isolation while another 644 are in home isolation. Eight persons are now patients at the country’s COVID-19 Intensive Care Unit (ICU). Meanwhile, 70 persons are now in institutional quarantine while 12 more persons have recovered from the virus. The total number of recovered cases in Guyana now stands at 5,197.
