In a year full of negatives, the safe and successful return of competitive cycling was a bright spot for the Guyana Cycling Federation (GCF).

Spawning November and December, the federation and its cyclists were able to pull off three successful Time-Trial events in the city, Linden and Berbice.

This augurs well for the sport and going forward, officials will now be more confident approaching the relevant authorities for permission to host events after a safe and successful restart. According to Racing Secretary of the federation, Malcolm Sonaram, the federation will once again re-engage the COVID-19 Task Force to seek permission to host races in the National Park.

“We were able to adhere to all the COVID-19 measures and we had a successful return of cycling.”

Sonaram pointed out that the National Park is the ‘home’ of local racing and will be meeting with the authorities as soon as possible to seek permission to have cycling return to the Park.

During the Time-Trial fixture which was won by National rider, Briton John, the cyclists started with a two-minute increment to avoid grouping along the race course. Temperature tests were also conducted on each cyclist.

The races saw big turnouts as the nation’s best wheelsmen were eager to unchain their competitive juices after racing was stuck in park for more than eight months due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
