GCF, cyclists preparing for next month’s national c/ships

The calendar has flipped to April and cyclists are in for a busier second quarter.

After a quiet first quarter with just two open races due to COVID-19 restrictions, two races are carded for this month.

The first of which is scheduled to pedal off Sunday pending permission from the COVID-19 Task Force.

According to Racing Secretary of the Guyana Cycling Federation (GCF), Malcolm Sonaram, the busier race schedule is geared towards readying the local wheelsmen for the National Cycling Championship and the Four-Stage Road Race next month along with the Caribbean Cycling Championships scheduled to be staged in Cuba from June 11.

“We are looking to take a formidable and prepared team to Cuba” Sonaram said yesterday.

Once permission is granted for Sunday’s race, the riders will mount their saddles for a 60-mile event which will start from 07:00hrs on CARIFESTA Avenue. The peloton will proceed to Half Way Tree and return to the point of origin for the finish.

Marcus Keiler won the season opener while Britton John soloed to victory in the open races staged so far this season. Other rider along with the duo will be gunning for a win on Sunday (once approval is granted).
