CCWU wants GUYOIL to honour labour agreement

Dear Editor,

The Clerical & Commercial Workers’ Union (CCWU) has expressed great concern to the Guyana Oil Company Limited (GUYOIL) about the Company’s recent decision not to honour an Agreement with the Union.

The CCWU represents the workers of GUYOIL.  In recent years the Company and the Union have agreed that the workers be paid salary increases based on a performance appraisal system.  The Company now takes the position that there would be no increases for the workers for this year.

The position now taken by GUYOIL runs counter to a letter received, dated September 10, 2020.  The letter stated that “the Board of Directors, at its Extra-ordinary meeting held on September 07, 2020, has decided that Pay Per Performance will apply to salary increases for the fiscal year 2020.”  But the Union is now told that the Company cannot honour the Agreement for this year.  This has caused great distress to the workers.

The CCWU therefore calls on GUYOIL to honour its Agreement with the Union or face industrial action.

Yours faithfully,

Sherwood Clarke

General President – CCWU
