Venezuelan bandits grab guns, $10M from Kaituma couple

A businessman and his wife were on Monday robbed of guns and $10 million by three Venezuelan nationals, who later engaged in  a shootout with police while making their escape.

Elroy Alam, 56, and Shonna Campbell, 22, both of Port Kaituma Waterfront, North West District, were attacked between the hours of 11 and 11.32 pm at the businessman’s premises.

In a statement, the Guyana Police Force said the men stole a .223 semi-automatic rifle with 30 live rounds and a magazine, a .32 semi-automatic pistol with 10 live rounds and two magazines, a 12-gauge semi-automatic shotgun, $10 million, four gold chains and four gold rings from the couple.

The statement added that the police, along with the Guyana Defence Force Coast Guard based at Morawhanna, were immediately summoned.

However, while searching along the Aruka River, the police came under fire from the occupants of a boat headed in the direction of Morawhanna.

The report said the police returned fire but the boat and its occupants escaped in the direction of the Guyana/Venezuela border (Imbotero).

Police stated that no ranks were injured, but it is unclear whether any of the suspects were injured during the shootout.
