Smithfield man fatally stabbed by neighbour

A Smithfield, New Amsterdam man was yesterday fatally stabbed by a neighbour after they  reportedly fought over alcohol and food.

Dead is Mark Griffith, 40, a labourer of Lot 49 Smithfield, New Amsterdam.

According to information gathered, Griffith resided with his sister, Samanda David, 44, a businesswoman, who related to investigators that her brother would often imbibe and get into arguments with her and the neighbour.

The woman told police that yesterday her brother imbibed all day and at around 5 pm she heard him arguing with the said neighbour about alcohol and food.

Stabroek News was told that the suspect was allegedly armed with a cutlass at that time.

A resident relayed that Griffith rushed out of his yard which resulted in a  fight between the two man.

Shortly after the sister was informed that her brother was in a nearby trench.

After rushing to the scene, she noticed her brother was bleeding from his chest.

Griffith was rushed to the New Amsterdam Public Hospital, where he succumbed while receiving treatment last evening.

This newspaper was told that he sustained one stab injury in the area of his chest.

Meanwhile, as of last evening the suspect was still under the influence of alcohol in police custody.
