The Ministry of Local Government and Regional Development has commenced rehabilitation works at the Mon Repos Market, East Coast Demerara, budgeted at $10 million.

Minister of Local Government and Regional Development, Nigel Dharamlall, confirmed this information to Stabroek News yesterday during a telephone interview. The Minister said that his Ministry has started phase one of the work that is to be done at the market. He disclosed that the project has a $10 million budget and it is hoped that more infrastructural upgrades can be carried out.

Dharamlall informed that the works in progress are the rehabilitation of the fence, the washroom, and the re-doing of the drains. He said that it’s the Government’s hope that in doing the rehabilitation work, the market will have a proper level of sanitation and would not just be a place where people sell, but instead be a clean environment to conduct business.

He added that the work is not compromising the vendors who sell there.

When Stabroek News visited the site, it was observed that the drains had been plastered with cement and cleaned for easier outflow.
