Arrest warrant issued for alleged CANU impersonator

An arrest warrant was yesterday issued for Kevin McDonald, the former police officer who allegedly pretended to be a Customs Anti-Narcotic Unit (CANU) officer.

McDonald, 37, of Nabaclis Public Road, East Coast Demerara, was detained more than a week ago after he tried to arrest Ryan Gonsalves while allegedly pretending to be a CANU officer. He was charged with two counts of abduction and was instructed to attend court yesterday to answer to the charges. However, he failed to do so and as such, Senior Magistrate Leron Daly, presiding at the Georgetown Magistrate’s Court issued a warrant for his arrest.

According to the police, on the day in question, Gonsalves was at his stall when McDonald approached him in a white Toyota Premio. McDonald identified himself as a CANU officer and proceeded to pick up a pair of handcuffs to arrest Gonsalves, who managed to resist him and escaped. Police say Gonsalves later made a report to the Alberttown Police Station and a police rank who was on duty in the area at the time was alerted and swiftly apprehended McDonald. A search was carried out on his person during which a pair of metal handcuffs was found.

McDonald was previously slapped with four counts of forgery and later found guilty of the offence in 2016. He had denied the charges and was subjected to a trial. He was found guilty by a city magistrate and fined $400,000.
