Corentyne stabbing incident leaves two dead, two injured

A stabbing incident at Number 43 Village, Corentyne last evening has resulted in the deaths of two persons and two others have been hospitalized at the New Amsterdam Public Hospital in serious conditions. 

Dead are Mahendra Ramotar, also known as `Sunny’, 43, a labourer of Number 43 Village, Corentyne, and Surendra Ragoonandan also of Number 43 Village, Corentyne, Berbice.

 According to information gathered, the suspect, was imbibing at a location in the village when he noticed a couple engaged in a heated argument which reportedly annoyed him. 

The police were told that the suspect then armed himself with a knife, proceeded outside and began attacking persons who were standing on the public road celebrating a wedding. 

Ramotar was rushed to the Skeldon Public Hospital, where he was pronounced dead on arrival while Ragoonandan was pronounced dead on arrival at the Port Mourant Hospital.

Stabroek News was told that both deceased sustained multiple stab injuries about their bodies. 

Meanwhile, Sukamattie Richmond, 40, a housewife of  Number 43 Village and Anthony Persaud, 30, a construction worker also of Number 43 Public Road Corentyne, are both at the New Amsterdam Hospital and their conditions were listed as serious as of this morning.

The suspect was arrested and the suspected murder weapon, a knife, was recovered at the scene. Investigations are ongoing.
