Homestretch accident survivor undergoes emergency surgery

Troy Glen, a survivor of the accident along Homestretch Avenue that claimed the lives of Dakera Gritten and Tonika Halley on Sunday, yesterday underwent emergency surgery for a fractured jaw and chin.

An aunt of the injured man, during an interview with Stabroek News, said that Glen remained hospitalised at the Georgetown Public Hospital (GPH), where he underwent the surgery.

Glen left home on Sunday sometime after 9pm on his bicycle to attend a barbeque in South Ruimveldt.

According to the woman, Glen was on his way home and seated in the back seat of the car when the accident occurred.

She alleged that there were two other persons seated in the front seat of the car who subsequently fled the scene after the accident. So far the police have confirmed that there were five persons in the car at the time of the accident.

The woman further explained that they were informed of the accident by Glen’s friend, whom he called before falling into an unconscious state.

Nineteen-year-old Gritten and 18-year-old Halley a mother of one, died Sunday after the vehicle they were in crashed into a utility pole on Homestretch Avenue shortly after midnight.

A post-mortem examination conducted yesterday on the deceased revealed that they died due to multiple injuries.

The other occupants who were involved in the accident have been identified as Delvern Luthers of Wortmanville, 22-year-old Joel Rose of D’Urban Street, and the driver of the car PVV 1289, 19-year-old Rayon Alves.

Up to yesterday Alves remained in police custody.

Acting region 4(a) Comman-der Senior Superintendent Khali Pareshram, when contacted yesterday, stated that Alves, who is said to have no visible injuries, remains in police custody assisting with the investigation.

According to a police report, enquiries revealed that at about 12.30 am the car was proceeding on Homestretch Avenue at a fast rate when Alves lost control of it and collided with a utility pole. The car toppled several times before coming to a stop in a nearby trench

Detica Gritten, the sister of Dakera, previously told this newspaper that she saw her brother four minutes before 10 pm as she was getting ready for bed.

The young woman said she had no idea where her brother was headed and only knows that he was picked up by Alves, a friend he once went to school with. Following the accident, she later learnt from relatives that Dakera had left to attend a barbeque.

Detica recalled that the family received the dreaded call about nineteen minutes after one on Sunday morning. Her mother was the one who answered the phone and Detica recalls her screaming and repeating “no, no” in disbelief at learning of Dakera’s demise.

Dakera, she noted was a labourer who worked at Toolsie Persaud Ltd and had only been employed three months ago.

Meanwhile, Halley, the other fatality succumbed to her injuries about six hours later while receiving medical attention at the Georgetown Public Hospital (GPH). Halley left home about minutes to ten and was picked up by a cousin and friends in a car.

Additionally, this newspaper also spoke with the mother of Joel Rose, one of the injured occupants who was discharged on Sunday. Rose who was also one of the four seated in the backseat of the car, suffered injuries to his head and foot.

According to GPH public relations officer, Chelauna Providence there is no record of Luthers another occupant of the car, ever being at the hospital.
