A twenty-nine-year-old miner drowned at about midday on Sunday after he went swimming in an old mining pit at Kumung Kumung Backdam, Puruni River, Cuyuni/Mazaruni.
The deceased is Manley Williams of Sand Creek Village, South Rupununi.
According to a police report, at about 11.30hrs on Sunday Williams was seen swimming in an old mining pit before suddenly going under. The pit where the incident occurred is said to be roughly forty feet from the main camp.
A search carried out by Williams’ brother resulted in the discovery of his motionless body in the pit. The body is being escorted to Bartica.
Police investigations continue.
