Man awaits sentencing for cutlass wounding

Leroy La Fleur is expected to learn his fate next week after he pleaded guilty on Thursday at the High Court in Berbice to carrying out an attack on a man using a cutlass.

La Fleur pleaded guilty to a charge of felonious wounding following an attack on Suraj Azeez that he carried out on September 11th, 2019.

Prosecutor Tuanna Hardy yesterday told the court that Azeez, and La Fleur are known to each other and on the day in question the two got into a fight; Hardy then stated that La Fleur began to inflict several chops on Azeez.

Azeez sustained lacerations to a forearm, his left leg and right arm. La Fleur was subsequently arrested and admitted to chopping the victim. Attorney Surihya Sabsook, who represented the accused, said he is a father of one child. She noted that while the injuries were serious they did not present a danger to life. She then asked for lenience and mercy to be exercised to her client.

La Fleur told the court that he was very apologetic about what happened. He told the court that he was sorry. “I very sorry man. I asking you for a little mercy please”. The prosecutor noted the injuries sustained by Azeez may cause disability. She said the accused needs to take control of his anger and the state is asking that the sentence reflects same.

Azeez is expected to return to court on February 24th for sentencing.
