COVID vaccination claim by businessman under probe

A staff member of the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation (GPHC) is under investigation by the Ministry of Health (MoH) after a businessman claimed that he was vaccinated with his first dose of the COVID-19 vaccine despite him not being a frontline worker.

Barbados recently donated 3,000 of the Oxford AstraZeneca vaccine to Guyana. President Irfaan Ali had stated that vaccines from this batch will be used exclusively on frontline workers. However, a businessman recently took to social media and stated that he was vaccinated with his first dose of the vaccine despite him not being a frontline worker.

According to the GPHC Public Relations Officer Chelauna Providence, the MoH  and the GPHC have since commenced an investigation to determine how the businessman was able to acquire the vaccine.

She stated that once the investigation is completed, the necessary actions will be taken against the staff member who authorized and vaccinated the businessman.

Recently, questions had been raised in relation to the vaccination of a guard from the Sheriff Security Service.  It was later explained that several guards attached to Sheriff Security were among dozens of other persons working at the Infectious Diseases Hospital in Liliendaal who were vaccinated for COVID-19.

Internationally several government ministers and others have had to resign over the jumping of the queue for COVID vaccines.
