Marcus Keiler kicked off his 2021 campaign on the most positive note, sprinting to victory in the 35-mile Forbes Burnham Memorial road race yesterday.

The standout biker won the season opener in a thrilling four-man sprint, besting breakaway mates, Briton John, Alex Mendes and Christopher Griffith in an exciting finish.

The 20 year-old took the winner’s trophy along with a sprint prize after stopping the clock in a brisk one hour, 12 minutes and 30 seconds in perfect conditions for racing.

Last year’s winner, Marlon Williams and Jaikarran Sukhai filled out the top six rewarding positions for the event which was staged from CARIFESTA Avenue to Belfield and back.

Mendes, Sukhai and Warren McKay were the top three veteran finishers while Alexander Leung and Aaron Newton were the top two juniors.

In the event which was organized by the Forbes Burnham Foundation and the Flying Stars Cycling Club, Ian Jackson pocketed a special prize for being the first Flying Stars Club cyclist to cross the finish line.

The annual event which was held under strict COVID-19 measures, was given the green light by the COVID-19 Task Force and the Minister of Health, Dr. Frank Anthony on Wednesday. The next scheduled cycling event, the Cheddi Jagan Memorial Three-stage race, is scheduled for next month.
