The pedal cyclist who was struck down by a Ministry of Health (MoH) mini-bus on Vlissengen Road has been identified as 41-year-old Cuthbert Crandon.

According to the police, the severely injured man was identified by his sister Kendra, a resident of Fyrish Road, Corentyne, on Monday. He has no known place of abode.

The police had reported that Crandon was proceeding south along the eastern drive lane of Vlissengen Road, holding a mattress on his head when he suddenly swerved right onto the western-drive lane in an attempt to cross onto the western side of the road. However, he ended up in the path of the mini-bus which was proceeding south along the eastern-drive lane of Vlissengen Road at a fast rate.  The driver of the mini-bus, Orlando Fraser, swerved in an attempt to avoid a collision but still ending up hitting the pedal cyclist. As a result of the collision, the pedal cyclist fell onto the roadway and suffered multiple injuries about his body.

He was picked up in an unconscious state by an ambulance and transported to the Georgetown Public Hospital. A diagnosis of his injuries revealed that the cyclist suffered five broken ribs, and a lung contusion. He is presently on a ventilator. Stabroek News was told that as of yesterday, there was no change in Crandon’s condition.
