DPP withdraws charge against one accused in murder of Kitty contractor

The Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) has withdrawn the murder charge against one of the accused in the murder of building contractor Peter Gonsalves.

At a hearing in Georgetown on Monday, Chief Magistrate Ann McLennan informed accused Kacey Heyliger, 28, of 42 Shell Road, Kitty, that the withdrawal of the charge was advised by the DPP.

Heyliger was charged in December with the murder of the 60-year-old building contractor.

After Heyliger was charged, a second man, Daniel Parris, of ‘D’ Field, Sophia, was charged with the murder in February. The charge states that on December 7, 2020, at Garnett Street, Newtown, Kitty, he murdered Gonsalves during the course or furtherance of a robbery.

Gonsalves was shot and killed around 9.45pm on December 7th, 2020, when he was attacked by two men on a motorcycle in front of the Red Bar at Garnett Street. The police had said that Gonsalves was proceeding west along Garnett Street on his motorcycle, a black and white Honda XR motorcycle.

One of the suspects, who was armed with a handgun, reportedly shot Gonsalves several times, causing him to fall to the ground. The bandit escaped on Gonsalves’ motorcycle. While one of Gonsalves’ workers had been his pillion rider at the time of the attack and he escaped unhurt. Gonsalves was pronounced dead at the scene by emergency medical technicians.
