Gov’t to build ‘one-stop’ diabetes centre – Anthony

The Ministry of Health will be constructing a “one-stop” diabetes centre to help persons with diabetes get better control over the illness.

Health Minister Dr Frank Anthony yesterday said that all medicines and equipment relating to diabetes will be available at the centre. He stated that when a person with diabetes goes to the centre they will be able to get advice from doctors, including access to eye and feet check-ups to ensure that there are no infections, as well as and nutritionists and will also have access to eye and feet check-ups to ensure that there are no infections.

In addition, he said there will an educational area so that persons will better understand the disease and how to avoid extreme illness.

“We are confident that this model is going to work because we have seen it work in other countries in the world and we have seen that they have been able to have better control over their diabetic patients. Glucose levels go down so that is something we are going to start,” he said.

He added that the first sub-centre will be constructed this year and that is provided for within the recently passed budget. He was hopeful that it will be completed by the yearend so that the programme can start in 2022.
