Hetmeyer, Gordon Challenge competitions bowl off tomorrow

After successfully hosting four grassroots tournaments last weekend, the Berbice Cricket Board (BCB) will host three more tomorrow as the cricket season continues.

Last weekend, the BCB staged the Chattergoon brothers, Narsingh Deonarine, Nagamootoo brothers and Mankarran Singh Challenge Cup tournaments at the Fyrish, Chesney, Whim and Kennard Memorial grounds respectively.

Some 16 clubs participated in the tournaments and another 12 will be in action tomorrow as the  board pushes on with its efforts to bring back the passion for the game at the grassroots level.

West Indies player Shimron Hetmyer and his wife Nirvani, will sponsor two Hetmyer Cups competitions at the Rose Hall Canje and Young Warriors Grounds respectively while former national player, Jeremy Gordon, will  sponsor the Gordon Challenge Cup competition at the Edinburgh Ground, East Bank Berbice.

The Rose Hall Canje-based Hetmyer Cups tournaments will see home team, Rose Hall Canje, Goed Bananen Land, Betsy Ground and Pathfinders CC while over at the Young Warriors Venue, the home team will clash with Flying Stars, Mount Sinai and Tucber Park `B’.

Edinburgh, Tucber Park `A’, Guymine and East Bank Blazers are the teams playing in the Gordon Challenge Cup.

Among the players expected to be on show are Isaiah Thorne, Joel Sietaram, Sasenarine Sukhu, Garfield Benjamin, Jamal Lafleur, Suresh Dhanai, Kishan Gangaram, Gorshan Barran, Philbert Wilburg and Deonarine Seepersaud.

BCB President Hilbert Foster said that 10 grassroots tournaments will be played across the county with the objective of allowing minor clubs the opportunities of winning titles and to identify new talent for further development. Teams are reminded that all players have to be attired in white and must walk with their own drinking water, lunch, face masks and hand sanitizers. Social distancing will be practiced in the pavilion while spectators will not be allowed into the venue.
