Boat operator convicted of manslaughter in case of Venezuelan

Boat operator Tony Rampersaud now awaits sentencing after a jury yesterday afternoon convicted him of manslaughter for the 2016 killing of Venezuelan national Henry Mendonca.

Rampersaud had been on trial before Justice Gino Persaud at the High Court at Suddie.

Following hours of deliberations, a jury returned a unanimous verdict, acquitting Rampersaud on the capital offence, but in a majority of 10-2, found him guilty on the lesser count of manslaughter.

His sentencing has however been deferred to March 30th, following the presentation of a probation report which is set for March 26th.

Mendonca was stabbed to death on the morning of November 19th, 2016 after a misunderstanding erupted during a drinking spree between him and the then 21-year-old Rampersaud.

Police had said in a press release that the incident occurred around 1 am while Mendonca and Rampersaud were imbibing at Eteringbang Landing.

It is believed that they had a misunderstanding during which he broke a bottle and stabbed Mendonca twice to his abdomen.

The injured man was later transported to the San Martin Hospital in Venezuela where he was pronounced dead on arrival.  The state’s case was presented by Prosecutor Lisa Cave.
