GPH patient found dead in front of city store

The police are investigating the death of a man who was admitted into the Georgetown Public Hospital (GPH) and was not discharged prior to his body being discovered in front of a city store.

The deceased has been identified as Winston Blackette, 55, of Lot 6 Laing Avenue Housing Scheme, West Ruimveldt, Georgetown. The police say the man’s motionless body was discovered by a security guard employed at Da Silva’s Optical, Middle Street, in Georgetown. It was reported that the body was found at about 21:00 hrs on Wednesday in front of the Zoon Online Shopping store located across the street from Da Silva’s.

The police said that the guard who found the body alerted his colleague who aided in assessing the situation before deciding to summon the emergency medical technicians. Upon their arrival, they announced that the man was indeed dead. According to the police, the deceased was clad in a red and black sweater, black jersey and black jeans, along with black rubber slippers. He also had a hospital name tag on his right wrist. He was observed to be bleeding through his mouth and nostrils but there were no marks of violence on the exposed part of his body. Foul play is not suspected at this time.

According to GPH records, the man went to the hospital complaining about chest pains and a swollen foot. He was examined by a doctor and was diagnosed with leptospirosis. He was then admitted as a patient in the male surgical ward and was not discharged.

The body was transported to the Lyken funeral home to await a post mortem examination as investigations continue.
