A total of 120 persons received COVID-19 vaccinations at the Georgetown Public Hospital (GPH) yesterday.

A GPH staffer told Stabroek News that the exercise, which began last week, is being done in an orderly manner, thereby eliminating the long lines usually seen at the facility.

The official credited this to a sufficient amount of staff working on site.

The official added that while there were no reported issues with the vaccines, some persons can expect to experience minor side effects, such as fever and headaches, afterward.

The official reminded that the vaccination exercise is intended for persons over 60 and noted that the only persons below the age of 60 who are being vaccinated are healthcare workers.

At the exercise yesterday, 19 of the 120 persons vaccinated were healthcare workers.

Meanwhile, the Ministry of Health vaccination sites continued to operate yesterday as well. However, this newspaper was unable to confirm how many persons were vaccinated.

To date it is unclear how many persons have been vaccinated across the country.

To cater for the large number of persons residing in the city, vaccination sites were established at the GPH and the Ministry of Health.

It was announced by the Ministry that persons desirous of getting vaccinated can visit these sites from Monday to Friday between 8 am and 4 pm.

All persons over the age of 60 are being vaccinated with the Oxford AstraZeneca Covishield vaccine, while persons under the age of 60 are being vaccinated with the Sinopharm vaccine. Immunization against COVID-19 began in February with a donation of 3,000 doses from Barbados.

At the start of last week Guyana had a total of 100,000 doses of the vaccine on hand, comprising a donation of 80,000 from India and another donation of 20,000 from China. Each individual requires two shots which means that the vaccines will cater for 50,000 persons.
