The main suspect in the fatal shooting of 10-year-old Anthony Cort last Thursday is expected to be taken to court today.

The Guyana Police Force yesterday stated that the prime suspect in the murder of Cort of Lot 614 Packet Corner, ‘C’ Field, Sophia is now in custody.

On Monday the police had reported that an extension to have the suspect who was arrested on Saturday further detained, was granted. This allowed for further interrogation and investigation at the Criminal Investigation Department headquarters.

In a telephone interview on Monday, Denise McPherson, the deceased’s mother, told Stabroek News that she wants justice for her son’s death.

Cort died at about 1 pm on March 11 after being shot by one of two bandits who invaded his neighbour’s home where he and his mother were visiting businesswoman, Monette Famey, at Lot 612 Packet Corner, ‘C’ Field, Sophia. According to a police statement, at the time of the invasion Cort was in the upper flat of the house along with the homeowner’s (Famey) son, while Famey herself, her aunt, Ena Skerette, and McPherson, were in the bottom flat.

However, the bandits who held the women at gun point, took them upstairs after demanding they hand over their valuables. It was while the women were attempting to convince the armed men that there were no other valuables in the home, that Cort, reportedly, stepped out of the room and was shot by the bandit. According to police, the bullet hit the boy in his left shoulder and he fell to the ground immediately.

A 9mm spent shell was later found near the body.

McPherson recounted that because she was in the same room with her son when he was shot and killed, the memory is still fresh in her mind. She said that while she is trying to cope with losing a second child, “it is something I will have to live with until I reach the grave. I will have to take it to the grave,” as she explained the horrible reality of her only son’s murder. Cort is the second child of hers to be murdered. In 2015 her daughter, Alicia McPherson, was also murdered.

On Saturday President, Irfaan Ali, Opposition Leader Joseph Harmon, Government Ministers, and other Members of Parliament, visited the now dead boy’s home and expressed condolences to the family.
