Whim labourer fined for Water St clothes theft

A labourer was on Wednesday fined $70,000 after he pleaded guilty to stealing a quantity of clothes from a vendor while his co-accused was granted bail.

Lakeram Sukhdeo, 38, a labourer of Whim, Corentyne, Berbice and 47-year-old Ali Khan, a labourer with no fixed address, were brought before Chief Magistrate Ann McLennan at the Georgetown Magistrate’s Courts where they were charged with simple larceny.

It is alleged that on March 16, at Water Street, Georgetown, they stole a quantity of clothes valued $81,500, property of Quacey McKay.

Sukhdeo confessed to the charge while Khan pleaded not guilty. The police prosecutor told the court that on March 16 at around 8.30 pm, McKay secured the items before leaving. Upon his return the next day at 8am, he discovered that the items were missing. He then made a report of the theft at the Brickdam Police Station. The police launched an investigation and subsequently arrested the two accused.

Khan was placed on $5,000 bail and told to return to court on March 31 while Khan was fined $70,000 or in default, four months imprisonment.
