BCB inviting applications for university grant

The Berbice Cricket Board is inviting applications from Upper Corentyne for the first ever BCB/Vitality Educational Scholarship.

Vitality Inc., an overseas based company will donate $200,000 towards a one-year grant to a cricketer from the area attending the University of Guyana.

The company, which recently opened a branch in the Ramnaresh Sarwan-owned Amazonia Mall located at Providence, East Bank Demerara, is headed by Sureain Sawh.

The BCB has promised to obtain  scholarships for youths in West Berbice, New Amsterdam/Canje, Lower Corentyne and Upper Corentyne.

The funds will be used to pay student fees at the University.

Interested persons must be living between No. 43 and Moleson Creek Catchment Area and must be an active member of one of the 26 clubs in the Upper Corentyne area.

Applications must be submitted by April 15 to the BCB office in Charlotte Street, New Amsterdam.

The application must include proof that the applicant is a student at the university, their CSEC results, two recommendations along with a letter from a cricket club in the area confirming membership. In the event that a suitable candidate is not found, the funds will be distributed to eight cricketers attending secondary schools.

The BCB has already handed out a one year educational scholarship to Naeem Khan from the Lower Corentyne area at the cost of $200,000 while eight students from the New Amsterdam/Canje sub zone benefitted from educational grants. These programmes were sponsored by Minister of Agriculture Zulifar Mustapha and West Indies player Shimron Hetmeyer respectively.

The BCB is expected to announce shortly, plans to assist cricketers in the West Berbice area with educational grants.
