Cremate instead of burying

Dear Editor,

The article in the Sunday Stabroek of 28th March on `A History of George-town’s Cemeteries’ with a picture showing the deplorable condition surrounding the tombs therein caught my attention…….this is not to say that I am thinking of my final resting place…..I have too many other positive things to occupy my mind!!! The article forcefully reminded me of the similar condition of the Blairmont Estate burial ground some years ago which prompted me to establish the crematorium at Blairmont, my hometown.

I now wish to take this opportunity to encourage the resort to cremating our deceased ones as opposed to burying them……assuming that there are no religious reasons mandating burial!

Even with the best will in the world, the maintenance of burial grounds will always pose challenges as it is something that we do not consider except when we have to dispose of the body of a loved one.

Yours faithfully,

Nowrang Persaud
