Russian COVID vaccines due tomorrow

A consignment of 25,000 doses of Russia’s Sputnik-V   COVID-19 vaccine will be arriving at the Cheddi Jagan International Airport, Timehri tomorrow, April 02, 2021 at 1:42 PM, according to  a release from the Ministry of Health.

Dr. Frank Anthony, Minister of Health will be on hand to receive the vaccines and will offer some brief remarks to the media, the release said.

Originally, the government had said that 50,000 doses of the Sputnik-5 vaccine would be arriving from the United Arab Emirates as part of a total purchase by Guyana of 200,000 doses. However, supply chains all over the world have been hard-hit  which probably explains the lower amount.

The 25,000 doses of the Sputnik-5 will fully vaccinate 12, 500 persons although it is likely that the authorities will target 25,000 persons with a first shot in anticipation of the arrival of more of these vaccines.

Thus far, the government has taken possession of 127,000 doses of AstraZeneca and Sinopharm vaccines. This number would fully vaccinate 63,500 persons.
