Truck driver in fatal Melanie crash charged with causing death by dangerous driving

A man has been placed on $250,000 bail after being charged with causing death by dangerous driving.

Brentnal Richmond was on Wednesday granted bail when he appeared at the Cove and John Magistrate’s Court where he was not required to answer to the charge of causing of death by dangerous driving.

The charge against him states that on March 29, 2021, at Melanie, East Coast Demerara, he drove motor truck GSS 5634, in a manner dangerous to the public thereby causing the death of 31-year-old Leon Singh.

Magistrate Fabayo Azore granted him bail in the sum $250,000. The matter was adjourned until May 20.

According to the police, motor lorry GSS 5634 was proceeding north along the western side of the Melanie Access Road when the driver failed to stop at a corner. The driver continued proceeding north onto the public road and into the path of Singh who was riding motorcycle, CH 3066, in a westerly direction on the same road.

As a result of the collision, Singh fell onto the road and reportedly
sustained injuries about his body, including his head. He was picked up in an unconscious condition and taken to the Georgetown Public Hospital where. he died while receiving medical attention.
