Sophia woman charged with power bills embezzlement

A woman was on Wednesday  granted bail after she denied embezzling monies entrusted to her to pay Guyana Power and Light (GPL) bills.

Bridgette Benjamin, 58, of 571 Block X ‘A’ Field, Sophia, Georgetown, was arraigned before Chief Magistrate Ann McLennan at the Georgetown Magistrate’s Courts when she denied the fraud charge.

It is alleged that between January 8, 2016 and December 9, 2020, at GPL, Main Street, while solely being entrusted with $2,769,282 by June Benjamin to pay same to June Benjamin’s account at GPL, she fraudulently misappropriated the funds.

After pleading not guilty to the charge, Benjamin was placed on $100,000 bail with the condition that she reports to the Criminal Investigation Department every Tuesday at 9 am.

The matter will be called again on April 7.
