The Civil Defence Commission (CDC) says that the overtopping at Zeelandia, Wakenaam, Essequibo River, Region Three, has been remedied and works to reinforce the sea defence continue.

The CDC in a statement last Friday said that the flooding has stopped and the water has receded following the overtopping which occurred at the area on Thursday. The CDC also said that the Neighbourhood Democratic Council (NDC) has assured that boulders will be placed to reinforce the sea defence as well.

The CDC previously said that the nearby rice fields and coconut plantations were inundated by the flood but that it did not directly affect residents. The Secretary of the Sea and River Defence Board (S&RDB), Jermaine Braithwaite, told this newspaper that the overtopping occurred at the embankment where works were authorized and started late last year. He further explained that in order to mitigate the flood, the contractor had gathered the necessary equipment to build up the land.
