Herstelling pensioner, 86, dies after being struck by car

A pensioner died on Monday after he was struck down by a car while crossing the Providence Public Road, on the East Bank of Demerara.

Neville Williams, 86, of New Scheme, Herstelling, East Bank Demerara, was hit at about 9.30 pm by a 52-year-old driver, of Vreed-en-Hoop.

According to the police, the driver of the vehicle, PYY 114, was proceeding south along the eastern lane of the eastern carriageway on the Providence Public Road when he alleges that Williams walked across the road and into the path of the car.

The police said Williams was hit by the front left side of the car and he fell and suffered injuries about his body.

Williams was picked up in a conscious condition by the driver and taken to the Georgetown Public Hospital’s Accident and Emergency unit, where he was pronounced dead on arrival.

The body of the deceased was transferred to the hospital’s mortuary to await a post-mortem examination.

Meanwhile, a breathalyser test was conducted on the driver of the car and found no trace of alcohol content. He is nevertheless currently in police custody assisting with the investigation.
