The pedestrian who was struck down on Sunday night at Providence, East Bank Demerara, has been identified, while the driver responsible, who police say was intoxicated, remains in police custody

Stephen Bishop, 51, of North East La Penitence, Georgetown, was crossing in the vicinity of the Ramada Princess Hotel around 7.30 pm on Sunday when he was hit.

The police, in a report issued yesterday, stated that the deceased was hit by Shivendra Ramraj, 34, of Herstelling New Housing Scheme.

Police enquiries revealed that Ramraj, operating vehicle PZZ 1621, was proceeding south along the eastern carriageway’s western drive lane at a fast rate of speed. He has alleged that Bishop ran across the road into the path of his vehicle.

On seeing the pedestrian do so, the police said, the driver claims that he applied brakes to avoid a collision but nonetheless struck the pedestrian.

As a result Bishop suffered injuries about his body.

He was picked up in an unconscious state and placed into the car and taken to the Diamond Diagnostic Centre, where he was pronounced dead on arrival.

Two breathalyser tests were conducted on the driver and both confirmed that the driver was over the legal alcohol limit.

He remained in custody yesterday.

Meanwhile, a post-mortem examination conducted on the remains of the deceased gave his cause of death as multiple injuries.

Marcia Craig, a relative of the deceased, told this newspaper that Bishop was on his way to a family function when he was hit down.

The woman explained that Bishop  was a guest at the Ramada Princess Hotel, where he was staying with a sister who was visiting Guyana.

The man, who worked as a mason, was described as a loving and kind person to all.
