DDL importing milk ingredients to process and package reconstituted milk as an interim measure

Dear Editor,

DDL has noted your Editorial of April 29, 2021, titled ‘Got Milk’ that addressed the company’s expansion into milk production, and would like to correct, among other things, the impression that the scope and intent of our project have changed. The new plant is designed to pasteurise fresh local cow’s milk as we had stated when the project was announced in 2018. It is a well-established fact that, at the present time, the local dairy industry is incapable of producing fresh milk in quantities that would make the plant viable. It is in this context that we are importing high quality natural milk ingredients to process and package reconstituted milk, as an interim measure. Importing powdered milk allows us to bring the plant into production to supply market demand, while the local dairy sector develops the response to take advantage of the opportunity that we are creating. We are continuing to engage stakeholders in this regard. It should be noted that the new facilities at TOPCO are designed to handle a range of products from a variety of plant and dairy sources. This will allow us to take advantage of alternatives if and when these become viable in our economy. We thank you for your continued interest and publication of developments at DDL.

Sincerely,

AlexGraham
