La Penitence construction worker gets bail on narcotics charge

A construction worker was on Wednesday released on bail after denying a trafficking a narcotics charge.

Twenty-nine-year-old Andrew Williams, a construction worker of Lot 155 Middle Street, La Penitence, Georgetown, was brought before Chief Magistrate Ann McLennan at the Georgetown Magistrate’s Court.

The charge against him states that on May 8, 2020, at Middle Street, La Penitence, he had in his possession, 32 grammes of cannabis for the purpose of trafficking.

He denied the charge.

According to the facts presented by the police prosecutor, on the day in question, at about 6:30 hrs, police were patrolling on motorcycles when they received information which guided them to the man’s residence.

Upon their arrival at the address, Williams was approached and at the time he had a satchel over his shoulder. The police asked to search his person and the satchel, and a small transparent bag containing leaves, seeds and stems suspected to be cannabis was found in the bag. 

Williams was then escorted to the Ruimveldt Police Station where the cannabis was weighed in his presence and he was told of the allegation. The prosecutor did not object to the man’s release but asked that conditions be attached to reasonable bail.

Williams was released on $15,000 bail, with the condition that he reports to the Ruimveldt Police Station every Friday at 9am. He will make his next appearance on June 16.
