Guyana United Artists mounting Independence exhibition

Dear Editor,

The Guyana United Artists (GUA) will be mounting a small but dynamic exhibition of selected works to commemorate Guyana’s 55th Independence Anniversary in Main Street, Georgetown on Friday 21st and Saturday 22nd of May from 11 AM to 5 PM. The theme of the exhibition is “Art and Social Transformation” represented in both sculptures and paintings.

As artists, we are providing visual images for our Guyanese compatriots of the past, present, and future. On the occasion of our 55th Independence Anniver-sary we need to make a serious evaluation, after 19 months of titanic struggle for political power between the major ethnic-based parties and 9 months of the new political dispensation.

We also wish to express our deep concern about the daily increase in prices of essential food items and the insensitivity that thousands of Guyanese are without jobs and no money, exactly how are people managing to survive? With a belly full of rice? The hardest hit are infants who have to drink “sugar water tea” and pensioners dying out in the hundreds.

GUA members are living on the frontlines, we know what the people are experiencing because we live among the rank and file. We are here to serve the nation and to spread consciousness.

For those persons who are willing to support our exhibition we need transportation in order to transport our sculptures and paintings to and from the venue for the two days’ exhibition and refreshments for the few artists who will be there to overlook the exhibition in keeping with the Covid-19 regulations. There will also be cards and printouts for sale. For further information, tel# 223-4636.

Thanking you in anticipation for your support.

Yours faithfully
